Evening Folks, While I love running the trains and of course Shunting, Id like to put more purpose of reason for running the trains. Ive read about
using a “Card System” which would probably give me a move in the direction
Im seeking, although Ive never seen this in operation.
I`m wondering if any of you folk have had any experience operating in this
manner, and, if so, could I get a “shuffty” on the guts of the matter??.
This is how we operate at www.hotrak.ca . The web site is being overhauled right now, but eventually we should get some templates for car cards and way-bill up there.
Basically the card card tells you what the car is and what it is for (when not obvious - e.g. clean lading only for boxcars, or food-grade only for some tankers). Then you put in the waybill that says “deliver this car to X”.
Then you make up a train in the yard more or less at random, and go around the layout (or out and back - whatever) and switch out the industries one-for-one. (The layout is "pre-populated with cars and their cards at the industries). End at the yard.
A step further would be to do industry-to-industry, where the yard would be considered just one possible destination. E.g. Take car A to industry 1 - pick up car B and take it to industry 2 - drop B and take C back to the yard.
Masonjar, that layout is as my Grandson described it, “Ausum” and I must agree.
Thank you for the guidedtour, much appreciated.
and Fast_ianb I`ll look into those Micro Mark Car Cards.
Shenandoah Software has a great program for making 4-sided way bills. I’ve been using this for several years with great results. Much faster than filling out manual cards.
