Cardboard base scenery pics, someone?

I wonder if someone can show me some pictures of how cardboard strips base scenery looks like? Just the cardboard strips before adding paper towels.

electro:

I’ve got some photos … will have to dig them out and post one for you.

And of course, we’ll be showing this all in glorious digital video detail in volume 4 of the Siskiyou Line series on scenery! But that’s not until this fall …

Thanks Joe, looking forward to see a photo of that.

Hope these help. The cardboard strips are hot glued to each other. I don’t use paper towels, I find them too messy & they rip. I hot glue cheesecloth to the strips & then paint on a thinned coat of plaster. After that I spread a thicker coat for sculpting etc.

Tom:

Yeah, that’s it, good job on posting the photos!

I just put 1" masking tape over the strips before I paint on the plaster mix. Masking tape is really easy to use for this, and the goal is to just cover the holes so the plaster won’t fall through. Once you put plaster over the top, it doesn’t really matter what’s underneath … so the simpler the better!

Sorry, I can’t see your photos, something seems to be wrong.

Yep, Tom, your photo links are now broken. [xx(]

Be sure and cover any scenery or track that might be below the area you are working with. GOOD LUCK,it is really an easy task if you take your time.

Sorry about that. After I posted the pics I deleted them off the Photobucket site. I did’nt know it would delete them off here.( Senior moment)[:I][:I]

Thanx Adam
Years ago I bought an AHM bridge kit , the plastic did’nt look right so I used the plans to make a this wood version. I don’t have any place on this RR to use it as atrestle so I am using it as an ore dump. Got the idea from a pic ina book.

tommyr:

Thanks for the pictures. Nice looking bridge you have there.

The new Kalmbach “Dream Plan Build” DVD has a very good segment on cardboard strip scenery with Jim Kelley the guy who built the Turtle Creek project layout
He uses a glue gun and a stapler

Here’s some photos from the North Umpqua area of my Siskiyou Line showing the cardboard strips. I apologize for the poor photo quality … these are a couple snapshots I took with a cheap camera, then scanned in on a flatbed scanner from the prints.

Of course when we do the scenery video (due out in December), we’ll have professional lighting and high-quality digital video cameras, so it should all look dandy on the screen.

Joe:

That looks great, thanks a lot!

When you start gluing these cardboard strips, do you have the idea already clear in your head how you want the scenery to look?

dknelson:

I was just about to ask if I could use a stapler instead of hot glue when I saw your post. Seems to me that a stapler must be the best thing to use?

Where do you guys get that cardboard from?

I just go to a store & ask if I can go through thier cardboard dumpster.
