Carl Sandburg 381

I was in Quincy, down by the river on Labor Day. I spotted the 381 crossing the river to Missouri side. The timetable shows Quincy IL as the final stop. Why was the train going over to West Quincy?

Possibly because that is where refuling takes place without facilities in Quincy?

Hi Bob,

The Illinois Zephyr (joined later by the Carl Sandberg) has always crossed the bridge (except after the 1993 flood) because there is only one track at the station and they can’t block the main during layovers. From the first run on November 14, 1971 until May 1, 1994 passengers were carried across the river. I’ve thought that if I were riding the train, I might try to stowaway in a washroom just to ride across the River.

After unloading psgrs @ the Quincy depot, the train is indeed taken across the river and parked @ the W Quincy yd, then taken back to the depot for loading when the crew is called for the next train.
