Carl Zimmerman's web-article on train in Britain

Aprt from a few obvious errors quite a pleasant article, but describing Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) as diesel multiple units (DMUs) is not the best way to curry favour. All the trains in the Brighton photograph are EMUs, as would the train the Cambridge from King’s Cross have been.

And while I know it’s a bit much to expect, can we have, one day, an American describe Britain as something other than a quaint tourist trap?

Yikes! Would a simple Mea Culpa do? [bow]

Or would you prefer to have someone publicly flogged round the Fleet?[4:-)]

Would you prefer “English Theme Park” Its your fault that all the tours have so many historical places and interesting museums, especially those quirky steam locomotives, to see.

My first visit to Great Britain was in 1962, and I have been back a number of times since.

My general impression is very favorable. Any USA Citizen who knows USA history and loks objectively at our own culture realizes almost instantly that USA’s culture, even the concept of Democracy, had its roots in England. Anyway, I am glad I experienced regular in-service steam-hauled trains in the land where the steam locomotive was invented before only excursions and museum operations would be left. And riding the Brighton Bell MU electric while it still ran with its PULLMAn tea service was a treat also.

Just a simple mea culpa. Flogging’s a little out of fashion now.
