I came across this site the other day while searching for RR maps from the 50s and found it interesting. The site has a pletheroa of maps showing the growth of RRs in SC from the beginning until today. (He also has a site for NC that is much the same.) The sites also discuss changes in industry and overall transportation over the last 200 years.
Nice. One needs to recognize however that these maps don’t show the private logging and industrial railroads that were prevalent in the early part of the century. Logging Railroads of South Carolina by Thomas Fetters (Heimburger House Publishing) contains quality maps by region showing the smaller lines.
Absolutely. I also have Fetters book. By the way, his book on the P&N is one of the inspirations for my layout. Growing up in the SC Piedmont, much of what he shows is right at home for me.
