cars for BIG BOY

Need ideas for B.B .HO. cars (freight, hoppers, caboose ext) trying to make original asposible . thanks pat n cece

A string of PFE 40 foot reefers would look mighty fine behind the Big Boy.

All of your rolling stock, in order to be authentic, should be that made prior to about 1950. I don’t recall the exact year that the last Big Boy ran on the Union Pacific over Sherman Hill, but you can’t go wrong with a fleet of PFE Reefers or 40-foot boxcars and a wood caboose.

The Big Boy photos I have seen seem to show a mixed bag of box cars - AREA, AAR and the standard PRR designs, mostly, along with some oddballs from other eastern roads. I don’t believe I’ve seen any open top cars or loaded flatcars.

The Big Boy was used to expedite high value merchandise, which traveled in box cars in those pre-intermodal days. While it’s possible that a yardmaster might have filled an unusually light merchandise train to tonnage with other lower priority loads (or ‘return to shipper’ empties) it is unlikely that coal or gravel would have been moved behind the UP’s flagship locos. After all, there were only 25 of them, and UP owned hundreds of locos more suitable for low-value drag freight.

As for cabooses, I would have expected to see the UP’s latest (as of the '40’s,) because the kind of freight allocated to Big Boy - powered trains would have been assigned to senior conductors, who, in turn, would have been assigned the newest cabooses.

No guarantees on any of the above, just logic.

REEFERS. Lots of 'em…

Big Boys ran until 1959, so anything from the 40s and early to mid 50s will work.
