Cat Construction Equipment

The other day someone told us about Kmart having Norscot 1/87th scale stuff at good prices so I dropped by to see what they have.
I picked up a couple of units and I’ve photographed one of them, the 315C Excavator shown below…

Locomotive not included…[;)]

They’re listed in Walthers for $19.95 and Kmart has them for $5.99 U.S.

also 10% off this week I see

Another post points out that the full priced Norscot line has movable parts that the bargain versions at WalMart lack. I wonder if they saved up factory seconds and assembled them for WalMart? But for most of us who are not collectors but actual users the lower price seems great.

Very nice equipment, I’ll have to check it out. Joey

A little modern for the 1950&60s,but nice !! Someone said that wal- mart has them also,I’ll take a look.

I’ve got a few of those and they look great on flat cars. I ran four flat cars with 2 dozers, 2 front end loaders, a grader, an earth mover and the excavator you’ve shown at a train show last weekend and got alot of compliments, they are very nice looking. I’m not to fussy on the grader but all the rest look great.

Too bad Norscot doesn’t make older Cat equipment, like D7 and D9 tractors. I’m modeling Peoria, and will have a chunk of Cat’s main assembly plant on my new layout. I’d really like to get something other than the Woodland Scenics white metal equipment! (me and yellow paint don’t get along…)

Proof enough for me…to Kandy Land!(My name for K-Mart)

Orsonroy… A company long out of business called , Umex made cat D7 dozers in HO scale. If you look long and hard on e-bay ,once and awhile you can find them. Umex also made other HO heavy equipment. I have an old ad ,from their product line some where,I’ll post it when I find it.

Ray,
If price is no object, you might be interested in the brass Classic Construction Models line:

and, there may be other vendors that make better white metal models among those at the 1/87 Vehicle Club:

Oof; $159 for a D-6?!? No thanks (let’s see, two tractors per flatcar, I think I’ll need at least eight to represent a good day’s load, that’s $2544, or twice what I think I’ll need for a full DCC system!)

What I’d love to see is a good, Roco-quality D-6.

It was mentioned, but worth repeating. Don’t confuse these with the fully articulated, more expensive, versions. No, these are not seconds. Actually for our modeling purposes these look very nice, and the molded joints, where the articulated joints and their unrealistic rivets would be, look more true to life. If you were actually modeling a construction site the articulated ones would be easier to stage in “work” positions. The cheaper units do have some moving parts but not nearly as many as the more expensive ones. I have not been able to find ANY reference to the cheaper units except on chat boards like this. Even the Norscot site makes no mention of them.

All mine are the more expensive versions with the moving parts. They were purchased from a Cat dealer. They now have a few more different types of equipment available.

Sorry TA462, I should have been more clear. The models to which I refer are the ones sold by KMart and Wal-Mart and perhaps other discount outlets. They are packaged in a blister pack on a yellow card and typically sell for around $6 U.S.

Norscot probably hasn’t mentioned the cheaper versions because 1. They are limited to the big box retailers and 2. they’d prefer you bought their higher-margin high-end line.

Can’t really blame them. They’ve got to be walking a tightrope trying to avoid gutting their own market.

I bought some of those at Wal-Mart a couple of weeks ago, haven’t done much to them yet, they are sitting in my Cat sales lot, couple of front loaders on the other side of the building.

Stop at K-mart yesterday after work, found more CATs dozer another shovel and a wheel loader, help I’m being over run by cats.

LOL, I was like that with John Deere tractors so I just opened up a dealer on the layout. I sell Cat equipment as well, lol.
