Hopefully NOT using it as the litter box[(-D][(-D]
My wife and I have two cats which are kept out of the train room. It is a nightmare to even think about cat hair clogging up axles and gears.
Take care,
Russell

They use the ballasted track as a scratching board
The spray bottle is the best bet. Shoot the cat in the nose (with water not 12-gauge)and they will learn real quick.
The best solution I have found is to lightly sprinkle the problem areas with some ground Cayenne pepper, the cats smell this, hate it and leave in a big hurry. Cats learn to leave the layout alone, dont do anymore damage, and theyre not hurt .
I’m not a cat person. I simply consider them a “mouse catching appliance”. When I lived on the edge of a cornfield I had two, for catching mice, that’s all. Now I’m in town and don’t have any as they’re not needed. Having said that, you wouldn’t like any suggestions or comments I would have concerning cat’s and layouts in the same room!
Trade 'em for some metal ones! (bulldozers) [:D]
Like locking stuff out of reach from the kids, you have to lock down on stuff that they could get into. That includes bags of anything.
Encourageing your cat not to get up on counters would also help. Even I find this logical. Sooner or later, you will return to you dinner plate and find that Kitty wolfed down your chicken…[:D]
Every Christman season we set up a very large G scale layout running all through our living room, dining room and looped around the tree. Several years ago our son taped a banana to a denuded (no superstructure) LGB motor block and attached a fresh catnip mouse to it and ran it around the track while our cats chased it. However, they later attacked his brand new Forney pulling a string of cars causing a major “cat-tasrophe”, so he put the Forney back on the track and rammed one of them head on at full speed, and while the other cat was laughing-cats do have a warped sense of humor-he ran his C-16 into it’s butt. They never even go near the trains anymore. Just got cat #3 and can’t wait to “train” her, too! As far as breaking cats from attacking bags of model railroad stuff, you might try tying several helium balloons on their tail with a ribbon or string and at first they’ll think it’s fun until they pop one, or as happened in our case-cat#! started chasing cat#2 (the one w/ the balloons) and the faster he ran the more the balloons hit each other, furniture and so on , making quite a racket, until cat #1 popped one of the balloons scaring the living hell out of both of them! Neither cat has gone near any bag in five years. And this is not April Fools. . .
Just a quick note from Bubba (>^…^<), I think the cat launcher got to him. Maybe your cat can decifer this ----;fmgiweyeglh4gt8tg4sm,fuio49f4jgeg89. Bubba did type this message. [:O][:O][(-D][(-D]
Out of our 5 cats only the twins( the only two who came from the same litter) will get near the test track I have set up. They used to EAT the ballast[:0], until I bought a spray bottle[:)], now they leave it alone completely![:D]! Now if I could only get them to stop tormenting the Geckos… HMMMMMMM[banghead]
THAT is hysterical !!! I never had to ram the cats with my trains, but with my radio-controlled cars…That’s another story…
I hate the cat hair that gets in the trees and scenery when he decides to take his nap on the layout
Cats…One way I know of is to use a spy bottle filled with water and let them have a nice spray every time they even think about hopping up on your layout…Now if you have a door to your layout room close it…A very, very gentle light tap with a finger on the noise will work if all else fails…
ROTFLMAO!!!
My one cat is WAY too fat to jump anywhere. But my old cat used to love jumping up and smashing things. I’d leave little bits of scotch tape, sticky side up, on the layout. This did 2 things:
1: taught him not to jump on the layout.
and
2: Gave me hours of entertainment watching the way he walked around with tape all over his feet.
God rest his soul [angel]
