When I visited the Fond Du Lac shops Tuesday, the transfer table had a “ding-ding” signal much like a grade crossing when it was in operation. I was wondering if anyone knew if there is an audible signal when a turntable was in operation?
The two turntables I have had experience with back in the 1940’s and 50’s didn’t have any type of warning bell. The electric motor and gears made a lot of noise, though.
Probably depends on the prototype and era. Bet it actually WAS a crossing bell.

Trust me, it wasn’t. I watched the transfer table for 15 minutes, and the bell came from around it’s control house. There are no protected grade crossings near shop 1 or 2 that have bells. Only at the end of the yard near area 5 and the yard office.
No, I meant that they probably actually used a crossing bell as the warning gong. Hence it sounded just like a crossing bell.

Oh, sorry. I miss understood you.
