Officials with the Cedar Branch & Western Railroad confirmed yesterday that the railroad is closing its Eudora, Kansas operation effective immediately. Mr. I. R. Baroke, chief finance officer, stated that the railroad has lost money continuously since it took over operations from the Missouri Pacific. The company hints that closure may or may not be permanent. Rumor has it that another railway, the Ozark Northern, has expressed an interest in obtaining the now defunct line.
Rail fans had noticed a sudden lack of rail cars on the line last week. Weyerhauser Wood Products, located in Cedar Branch, was notified several months ahead of the closure. The plant manager, Mr. Woody Stock, told the press that he is hopeful that another railroad will pick up the business, “trucks just ain’t got the same charm, ya know?”, stated Stock. “I miss dem dare cabooses and the train a’whistling for the crossing at da crossroads. It just ain’t de same!”
