Celebration

Anyone know if the U.S. Is going to celebrate like Canadian Pacific and stop all their trains for 2

minutes on tuesday??? Dave Br

For what.

Here in the USA it’s Veteran’s Day on Tuesday. Up in Canada it’s Remembrance Day- same reason?

EDIT: Nevermind, was just sitting here watching the British House Of Commons on C-SPAN, and the subject of Remembrance Day just came up there. Remembering their military veterans, just like here.

I hope everyone takes the time to thank a veteran Tuesday. I know alot of railroaders that are veterans also I know alot of railfans who are also veterans.

thank you

stay safe

This question is very sad, very sad indeed.

I’d say you’re jumping to conclusssions. That was the first thought I had- for what? Without knowing the whole context of what it was about, I was in the dark, until I read the following posts as well. My mind-reading skills went away with my thick, macho, head of hair. I don’t believe either is coming back soon.

ditto

Mainly because it indicates an institutional forgetting of the significance of the day. Federal facilities, schools, and some local governments will be closed, but for many businesses it’s business as usual.

If a person isn’t involved with an organization that observes the holiday, it’s a little harder to fault them for not remembering it exists.

What you say is certainly true. But, having read only the first post, I , like csxns, wasn’t quite sure what the signifigance of the 2 minute mention was all about. Had someone asked that further down the line, once it was obvious what the post was about, then, it would indeed, be a sad question. However, when the question was asked, it appears that csxns and I both were unaware of what was even being discussed.

In fact, when I read the first post, I thought maybe it had something to do with the CP/DME deal.

Back to the issue at hand…Does CP do this every year on Veteran’s Day/ Remembrance Day? I’ve never lived in a community that doesn’t acknowledge Veteran’s Day. I hope I never do.

Thanks Murphy.

I wish our R.R. system was like our Military system.Maybe if you can"t

YES CP will stop all trains on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month for two minutes as it has for a long period of time. This 11/11/11 was the the time when WW-1 peace was signed.

For the last week or so Canadians have been wearing red poppies on their lapels (until end of Tuesday) to remember our armed forces who have died during the wars. At Churches last Sunday, special services were held and there were parades throughout Canada. Special services will be held in Ottawa on Tuesday which will have special laying of wreaths on the war memorial & these services will be broadcast oover TV.

This year, instead of wearing just one poppy, a new pin was formed with 2 poppies, to commerate not only those who have died during the previous wars, but also to remember those who are presently serving in our armed forces.

In answer to the original question, probably not. Veterans’ Day was once a paid holiday for employees of American railroads; it hasn’t been for well over ten years now.

Saw a piece on tonight’s news (NBC) about Canadians coming out to salute the bodies (and souls) of veterans that were returning home from Afghanistan in hearses. A simple gesture, but one that won’t be found here. I guess the U.S. doesn’t lend itself geographically to having a single “Highway of Heroes”.

My father and father-in-law were both World War II veterans. I don’t think my wife or I ever really learned to give veterans the respect they obviously deserve. When we were kids, it was fun to play “soldiers”, but when we were growing up, the wars’ necessity was being questioned–and respect for the individuals’ duties was clouded by a lack of respect for the authorities that condemned them to it. Patriotism became passe, often replaced by cynicism.

Please understand that this isn’t to say that everyone here is guilty of this, or has this attitude; and I certainly don’t mean to offend anyone by making these statements. But, for some reason, the lack of patriotism or respect hasn’t crept north of the border. Whatever the reason, it’s our loss.

I believe Canada has for years stopped trains for 2 minutes at the 11th hour of the11th day of the 11th month. However US rails have never, to my knowledge, noted the day in any such way. I did see on another forum that NJT is giving all veterans of all wars free transportation on Tuesday the 11th.

Would or could those new pins be available for a couple of us down here in California???

Dave Br (probably 10)

about the new pins… They just came out recently and were not publized at all. Just an item on CBC TV a few days ago showing a picture and description of them. Two poppies with what appeared to be a torch between them. A great idea, but why come out with them a few days before Nov 11. All the people selling the poppies only had the single poppy. Money donated goes to the veteral’s in hospitals etc. I’ll check with the Legion branch here and if I can find any further info, I’ll post it here.

Sorry to hear CP not stopping their trains anymore on 11/11/11 But in Toronto all street cars, busses and subways stopped for two minutes
