Celotex base for roadbed and track

I’ve tried some celotex on plywood as a base for roadbed and track but it seems very “dirty” and the loose fibers could cause problems. Would Homasote be better?

Jerry

Homasote is great stuff. I placed track right on top of it. It lasted some 30yrs.

Homosote is much more stable. Many people swear by it.

I wouldn’t use Celotex: it’s a fiberglas-based product, and you’ll get the fibers stuck in your skin every time you go near it.

If you want something easily carved, go with extruded foam. It works great.

Thanks for the comments. I like the foam idea. What’s the difference between Styrofoam (it says “extruded foam” on the label) and polystyrene? Which works the best. I like the 2" thick Styrofoam, which I can get in 2’ wide sheets that work well for me?

Jerry

Styrofoam is the white, cumbly, pellet stuff like coffee cups are made from. Pink or blue extruded foam is the foam of choice. You can get it at most Home Depot, Lowes, etc, ubless you live where it is considered an environmental hazard, like California. I do not know about its availabilty in the northern states, but it is easy to get here in Texas.

Thanks. They have the 2" blue at Lowes and that’s what I will use.

I don’t see any good coming from Ceoltex, other than being readily available. I’d stick with foam subroadbed, plywood, homasote or foam roadbed.

Stay away from celotex! It expands & contracts much more than Homosote or wood. Made a short diarama with some salvaged from my house. When the heat went on the track looked like a pretzel.
