changing couplers

I recently purchased an Atlas 34’ hopper car that came with horn hook couplers. WhenI tried to change it to knuckle couplers, i noticed that there was no screw holding the coupler in place. Is it possible to remove coupler?

Yes you can remove the couplers. Start by using a jewlers screw driver and pry gently up on the couplers box. Atlas couplers are self closing type, meaning they have a pin and hole to hold the coupler in.

Yes, if the couplers were originally attached to the body, not the trucks, you can drill a hole and tap it for a 2-56 screw. You can buy the Kadee kit #246 from your LHS. This kit comes with the correct drills and tap that you need. If the couplers are mounted on the trucks, these are Talgo trucks and you’d use Kadee #212, the Talgo truck adapters.
