At one point in the early Dickens years, one of the blowdown valves on 844 projected horizontally, reportedly at about head height, with 300psi pressure behind it. I do not know how this may have been re-routed subsequently, but that was a disaster waiting to happen…
However, what exactly is wrong with advocating for safety along the right of way? Especially where the uninitiated is concerned? Why bring a dog at all? Why put a child in danger needlessly? 80 to 90% of the people out along the line who will be watching 4014 pass by are clueless beyond “Day out with Thomas”, Polar Express trips or Disney park trains. Those are much more controlled encounters than standing with one foot on the ballast at some random grade crossing. And how many of them are actually looking with their own eyes at their surroundings rather than what the screen on their phone shows? I’ve seen a dozen videos from this trip already where some moron is standing on the tracks until the last moment.
I thought that was rather obvious. Just trying to add a little levity around here. I will be more transparent/careful going forward. Everything is turning into a reality distortion zone these days.
Levity, how dare you interject levity into such a serious place as a railroad forum. The Earth will slow its rotation if levity ever breaks out - the World will be ending in 10 days…the horror!
Wasn’t the accident someone climbing on the 4014 and falling off the ladder backwards and fracturing their spine? I understand the dogs / drones were part of it as well. I think you folks missed the real reason for the distress here on the part of the crew. I think they were concerned about the other stuff but the guy falling off the locomotive was the primary concern.
Had to look up the broken spine story. The man was treated and released the same day. I think he was more embarrassed and disappointed than anything else.
