Chatterbox Spring 2025

Afternoon
Tomorrow is the first day of Spring. Mother Nature is going to send us some weather. It is also the Bosses birthday as well. Csx is working on crossings in Defiance and points west. Csx is also having problems getting trains into yards and terminals. Here are a couple pictures from last weekend. We went to the Ft. Wayne botanical garden. They invited some train guys to run as well. It was fun. Time for chores.

Joe, hard to choose between flowers or your layout, but I guess your layout wins. LOL sure looks nice. endmrw0320251942
Understand canopener, but who is Matt?

MP 104 the flowers were from the botanical garden. The layout is from a local group that visited that weekend. Who is Matt? He is our son. Was raised around trains. Has had many professors of trainology as he is grown. Always curious and helps those who want to know more. Here is a picture of us at the NDW yard in Defiance.Time for work.

Woke up my Triumph TR-7 today from its Winter slumber. Crossed the Old Main Line at Main Street in Sykesville and Morgan Station Road at ‘Morgan Station’.

Tried firing it up a couple of days ago, I had a 1 Amp battery charger connected to a timer that would turn the charger on for 1 hour a day - battery didn’t do the job, having installed it in 2016 I featured it had met its end date. For grins hooked up a regular battery charger, and forgot about it, after two days I remembered, put the key in and it fired right up.

Great looking car!

Every fourth year around this time, I go out to start my 2nd car which sits idle in the garage most of the winter while the other car gets all the use. Sure enough, it won’t turn over , and I have to call my insurance road service for a jump. Then it’s on to my car repair guy for a new battery. That just happened this past week. 2013, 2017, 2021 and now 2025. Just like clockwork.

Sunny but a cool Nw wind was blowing today. Boss needed to go back to Indiana to look for a few things. On the way home we saw some old rebuilt emds still earning their keep. One was the switcher at the elevator near Waterloo Indiana. The other two were Ns rebuilds on a B 47.Its a long distance local that is supposed to go from Toledo to Elkhart Indiana,Well they ran out of time in Waterloo. Things to put away.

Been in the 40s here for days in the Chicago area.

Rich, charge by alternator and normal discharge, that cycle is what the battery “wants to see”. Your “always used car”, how often to replace that battery?
My mom had need of a new car battery. I just KNEW it had been changed several years before. Why? I had to take the car apart to simply change the battery. At the dealer the battery was found to be only 4 years old. Mom didn’t drive that much.

Going on 5 years.

Rich

Battery in the Triumph was put in in 2016. 9 Years on it.

Most I have ever gotten out of a daily driver was 6 years on the original battery in my 2003 Durango - the subsequent replacement seemed to amp their last after 3 years.

Battery on my race car lift dated from 2013 and it died last year after 11 years of use.

good morning
Once in awhile you have a friend come through town on a train. He had Csx I 191 with the CSX Pm heritage unit as sole power and 426 axels behind him. Said he made it over Hicksville hill at about 16 mph. Here is the “Mater Express” Need to get stuff for work.

Planning a local railfanning trip to see the new MBTA extension along with some reported LTEX E Units in my local yard, potentially featuring some MC or CSX Action. I’m also planning to get down to CT one of these days for a few museums (DRM,RRMNE,CTM,CVRR). I might also try and see some of the hobby shops in RI. Either way, I’m gonna have a fun weekend.

Love DRM, was there a couple weeks ago. Got to chat with a retired Amtrak engineer while hanging out in the cab of the AEM-7 he used to run New Haven to New York!

Times like that reminds me of this photograph I took near Panama City.

I went there in September, but want to get a few more photos, I also haven’t been to the RRMNE since i was a kid.

A little ice this morning, took down a few trees and power lines. More is forecast for tonight (Saturday), so we’ll see if I can sleep through the night (firefighter).

Mother nature sent the storms to our north last night. More to come on Wed. Csx has been running different train symbols lately. The Ndw yard in Defiance was looking empty yesterday. Time to do some chores. Don’t get fooled tomorrow.

We dodged the heavy stuff that hit mid-Michigan (basically petered out after crossing into Canada), and the ice that plagued northern Michigan, which is really a mess from what I can see.

More weather to come. It is spring, after all.
