Check out the burnt Dynamic brakes on this engine.

This weekend was Railfest. I got a pic of these when they went by. They were also running a pair of PRR E8’s that were privately owned, I included a pic of it. NS let them use the mainline. The E8’s ran 3 trips a day going around the Horseshoe Curve. When i caught it the first time I went back to see it comming down and wondered why all the cops were around. The last car on the train was a heavyweight PRR Observation. A couple of kids were waiting for it and opened fire on it with paintball guns. Well they were all caught.

Paintball guns? How did kids get stuff like that?

Neat pics. I hope they nail those kids butts to the wall! You have a hard time reading the street signs near me because of the kids shooting them with paint balls.

OUCH! Those dynamic brakes certainly have had better days! That would make an interesting model…

They’re sold at Wal-Mart every day.

I wonder what caused them to ignite like that.

Has anyone ever tried making dynamic brake chicken? [:o)]

Yes. Low, low prices. Every day.[:)]

Hi,

Interesting shot of the dynamic brakes. Read on another thread that this is what happens when the fans that cool the resistor grid fails. Lucky that the locomotive did not catch fire due to the molten metal from the resistor grid falling on parts of the engine below.

Frank

I might try that with a GP50.

The paint job on that E8 is beautiful!

I’m guessing that was caused by a fire at some time or another, not just extrodinary heat from the dynamic brakes. One would have to see the burn pattern on the top to get a better idea of true cause.
