Cheyenne UP Steam Shops - need advice on the scene

I’m looking for some advice. As some of you know, I’m modeling the Cheyenne UP Steam facilities. Right now I’m building the Rail Shop. I have some pieces left over because Walthers gives you extra parts for options on the building.

So I have this extra wall piece that I can use as a backdrop building.

Should I use this backdrop building on my scene? Will it look OK, or does it look out of place?

From the Rail Shop, I will extend one track to go through the Rail Shop. Into either the Roundhouse or another building.

What should I do?

Here is the prototype scene:

And here I placed the extra wall piece I have:

Michael,

It’s hard to see if there’s enough room between the backdrop and the TT, but if there is, here’s what I’d do. The left side of the leftover piece can snuggle against the backdrop, but on the right side, pull it away from the backdrop and add a short section of wall to fill the resulting gap. That gives the building a little more 3-D heft. This will work even better if this puts the front of the leftover piece parallel to the shop’s back wall.

The only sticking point is that the backdrop is an open field. If you can add some trees or other items to hide where the 3-D flat intersects the 2-D backdrop that will help blend it in.

Have you had a look at Bob Darwins’s great book “The Union Pacific in Cheyenee”? He has photos of about all the major rail buildins and enough shots of the railyard to see if your building might fit in somewhere.

Thanks Mike for help and suggestions.

There is no room directly behind the turntable, its right up against the backdrop.

Another thing, is The Depot Passenger Station and train shed will be just to the right of the turntable.

How about something like this?

No I don’t but going to get it now!

I would raise the area to match the height of the mainline style cork you have leading to it. Sure you were planning on that though. I think you can pull that building off…turntable looks good.

Yes sir. I will be using sheet cork in that entire area, and surrounding the turntable.

OK Rich convinced me to use that wall piece as a 3 stall roundhouse. In the corner.

This is what I have planned. I think it should look good, after I put sidewalls, a roof using sheet styrene.

And cut off the top row of large windows.

What y’all think?

Rich

Yeah, I think Rich is onto something. That hides the corner nicely, also.[Y][B]

I pulled an all nighter last night, and was able to finish the roundhouse backdrop building.

All the parts I used, was from extra pieces that Walthers gave me. The roof I made from textured sheet styrene though.

Michael,

That turned out well, I’d say. I love recycling various pieces of kits and junk parts into something new and useful. Good Work![B]

Now all you have to do is cut the front end off three locos to sit in those bays…[(-D]

Looking good Michael.

An all nighter? You must have it bad. Same here, have stayed up late but never an all nighter.

I do need to visit my pusher (LHS) every Saturday or I get the shakes.

That is looking pretty Cool!!!

Great Ideas & execution of talent too!!!

Kudo’s from the peanut gallerery over here!!!

Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback.

Would you have known, that this was my very first kitbash? Yep never even done that before.

Mike, that is a great idea. I have already suggested to Michael that he pick up three junk tenders and cut them up so the rear ends sit in the three stalls.

Rich

Rich,

It would be a even less painful to take the smokebox and tender end from one loco, plus whatever could be scrounged up for the third “puppet” loco.[oops]

See, that wasn’t so bad…[X-)]

Nice!

Rich

Michael,

You make it look so good, you are a seasoned Pro!!!
Really, I see the calculation, positive approch, & execution, of a well established modeller.
We are all awaiting the next set of pix, as you are insiring all of us.
That is real nice work, I really like & enjoy it!!! (with you!!!)!

I am humbled by your comments. Thanks! Coming from somebody who is very talented, that is great to here.

So… my excuse for being a newbie must be over? Dangit! LOL

btw, where’s Crandell at? I would have thought I’d see him in this thread…
