Chicago Transit Authority to purchase up to 846 cars

Change that to $8 billion. Factoring in cost over-runs, pork, fraud, waste, corruption, kickbacks, and abuse.

I wonder who is going to pay for all these new cars. The city of Chicago is nearly broke?

In Chicago? Never!

PLEASE!!! CTA,

No more “bowling alley” seating type cars!!!

I’m all for almost any kind of rail transit investment, but I just can’t halp but to wonder if equipment isn’t being replaced sooner that necessary.

Mr. Attenhofer: That is an easy question to answer: Chicago Mayor Rom Emanuel’s former boss was Obama. It’s sad but quite likely that this car order will be paid for by our grandchildren.

All to be done with more tax’s

@Mr. Aldinger: 30-year old equipment is being replaced too soon? How old is your car? Like your car, railcars require more extensive - and expensive - repairs as they get older. Add that safety standards and transportation technology have changed, and factor in the cost of upgrades. Eventually, the purchase of new cars is financially the wisest choice. Also, at the rate of one per weekday, the last 5000-series car will be delivered in early 2016. I for one am glad to see CTA is looking forward for a change. And I agree… NO MORE BOWLING ALLEY CARS! More seats please!

Too bad some of these “old” cars can’t be refitted and sent to Boston for the Red and Orange lines on the T.

“Estimated value (cost) of $2 Billion…”

What are the funding sources for this estimated cost? The CTA, city of Chicago and the state of Illinois aren’t exactly flush with money these days …
