Yet, we can’t afford a new tunnel from New Jersey to Manhatta?
Might as well laugh it off right now. North America is slowly drifting towards Russia because of a little problem called Plate Tectonics. It means that this tunnel will be subject to earthquakes, and will be squished inwards over time. It’s the same reason the plan for a train under the Ocean from New York to Paris was quickly abandoned. Besides, I thought air-planes were doing this job just fine.
It won’t happen in my lifetime.
All that walmart money might be put to good use after all!!
When it reaches the US border, China will be introduced to the words “Environmental Impact Report” and it will end there.
Peter I think you need to blame the previous president. http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/budget-deficit-track-six-year-low
I’M surprised China has any money left. They loaned it all to Obama. For all you Obama supporters here, we’ll end up paying for it anyway by trying to pay back all of the interest we owe China.
That’s an idea from the same country that built empty cities all over the place…
Michael Morris…Yeah cleaning it up for six years now. Raegan did it in two.
Not too long ago it was us who made such monumental plans. Now, the American dream has been bound and gagged thanks to a the left’s zeal for socialist policies.
Tallest skyscrappers, fastest trains and massive construction projects are now outside U.S. borders.
If this goes through, it will be a very huge and long project! Dangerous part being the long tunnel.
Quite an undertaking, to say the least.
The President with the poor fiscal record was the last one, not the current one. Our current President has been doing a great job of cleaning up the mess the last one made, and no president in my life time has been as rail friendly as this one.
Walmart will finally have a direct factory to warehouse link!
I hope they are willing to pay for it, since we sure can’t, being broke thanks to our president’s poor fiscal record to date.
The last I knew, Russia was already building towards the Strait and has plans to build a similar tunnel.
Although it would be a huge task, if Russia, China, Canada and the USA all participate, it may actually get done in our lifetimes.
BTW - The 125 mile distance is not accurate unless it means two 62.5 mile long tunnels which is about right.
Great, Hi Speed rail all the way from China to the US border. Then a Jackass for the rest of the trip!!!
TRAINS. Check with Louis T. Cerny (former Executive Director of AREA) on this. Some years ago AREA had a committee on this tunnel and there may still be an active group on this side of the Pacific. Lou is probably the most knowledgeable North American on these activities.
The tunnel is best built across the Bering Straights between vicinity of Wales, Alaska, and Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula; a distance of about 50 miles. With three to four mile long approach bridges at each end, the under-water section is a manageable forty-two miles. Since the average depth is only 50 to 60 feet, (remember, this was the ‘land bridge’ linking Asia and North America as recently as 10,000 years ago), the construction can be completed by constructing tunnel segments on land and sinking them in place. Very feasible. And, yes it needs to be high speed in order to compete with ocean transport.
