Chnged lighting in caboose !!

In anticipation of my new Atlas steamer ever arriving, I got a Pennsy caboose for it & thought I’d make the light work for TMCC. I found some sockets & a 28 volt bulb I had gotten years ago from Radio Shck & fitted it up to it . It seems just right now. here are some pictures of the new light & the one I took out is below the caboose.

Hers it is lit up with the TMCC on ! I may add a switch later for daytime operations !!

Thanks, John

That’s a good idea, John. It should last a long time at that voltage.

I run conventional, and had to do the opposite. I put low wattage bulbs in mine to be bright at 10 volts.

Chuck

John,

Looks like a good plan. With the 28V lamp it probably looks more realistic as well - not glowing bright white but more of a yellowish light?

Thanks for the idea!

Thanks Chuck & Luther !! It does seem more yellowish & I have the bulb aimed toward the little red lantern on the side & it is a little brighter now too !!

Thanks, John

Hello John- That’s a nice Pennsy Caboose from 1998 you’ve got there & that is also a good idea you have for using it on TMCC Voltages. Take Care.

I’ve been toying with the idea of using a lining of mylar inside the caboose to even out the light – theere’s a word for that - refract, maybe? – so you don’t see teh bright glowing bulb in a post war caboose. I wonder about the heat build up and if that would be a fire hazard.

Looks great, John! That’s the old pepper!

Frank, many of my cabeese have plastic windows and are lighted. I don’t think you have to worry about overheating issues.

Jim

Frank, “diffuse”.

L.E.D.= light + minimum heat

AND the light can be directional. Out the side instead of all sides, or just out the top.

Kurt

what he said! [:D]

Glad you asked, Frank !! I was hoping he would come back with a little more info !

Thanks, John

Sure wisha dicaboose with dismoker I got hada diffuse. No diformation data way!

Whadaya gonna doo?

P.S. Good thinking ahead of time there, John! I’ve been a little overly paranoid lately ( with good reason ) concerning the heat generated by car lighting under TMCC operation.

Bruce- You have plenty of experience with heat from Corvairs, so heat from a TMCC operation should be no sweat for you. nyuck,nyuck,nyuck![;)][:o)][:o)][(-D] Note to Bob Keller: We need some Three Stooges smileys for more effective & funny posts.[:o)][:o)][:o)][:o)] Take Care all.

Kieth,

Had the smoke unit thrown a fanbelt I might have caught the problem in time. The silent China Syndrome smokers are harder to detect once they go critical. I propose that Legacy come with a red idiot light and buzzer to warn of pending smoker meltdown [;)]

Ah! But which 3 stooges? Curly, Larry, Moe, Shemp, Joe? Aaaaaugh! Wise guy, eh?

Bruce Webster

Bruce- Curly,Larry,Moe, & Shemp are fine with me! Nyuck,Nyuck,Nyuck. Even a Groucho smiley would help out matters.[:D][:D][:P][:o)][:o)][:o)] Take Care.

Great idea. you did a nice job.
