I came across an old shot I took back when I was a teenager (back in the old days of film[swg]). It’s a simple snow scene diorama I did for a Christmas theme. I recently scanned the slide, added in some smoke, and turned it into a B&W shot:

I bought an N scale Atlas Trainman 50’ boxcar painted up as Conrail class X45 (ex-PRR) #155403. The prototype:

Now the model:
The lettering is spot-on for this car. I know Conrail Historical Society advised Atlas on this project, and the results show! The car is a pretty close match minus a few details such as door width and end corrugations. Considering this is Trainman (i.e., very affordable) and the crispness of detail and correct lettering, those minor differences didn’t bother me. The only differences that meant something to me were related to the model still having full ladders and the roofwalk. I chose to fix the latter, but due to wanting to preserve the paint, ignored the former.
At the urging of peers, I removed the roofwalk, filled and removed the mounting sockets, and re-countoured the roof corrugations. I colored the roof with a silver Sharpie and airbrushed it with a mixture of Poly Scale boxcar red and PRR maroon. Matching the colors perfectly isn’t necessary since the roof is supposed to look faded with a faint hint of the underlying metal showing through. Good masking, however, is.
Final treatment included adding the proper ACI labels, Dullcote, and then airbrush weathering with a very light fade coat and then some grime. I also used a dark rust/grime acrylic wash around the doors. I model July of 1980, so the July 1976 paint job on the car would only be 4 years old. I wanted used but not yet abused.
This is a great, affordable example of an early Conrail car from back when there were dozens of classes of predecessor road cars jumbled together and before the big purge

From Left to Right: Louisa McMuffin, Camp 2 Director, Chief Engineer John Gardiner, Max Wells, Camp 2 logger and outspoken proponent of anything that crosses his mind, Walter Woodard, director of front to mill operations (he divided up the job between himself, front to railroad, and Chief Engineer John Gardiner, railroad to mill operations), and Fred Bradley, mill director and outside contact (he often goes to Portland and other places to get things like replacement parts, supplies, and whatever else the SP&S cant bring to them, including customers.).

Great scene Motley.[Y] Takes me back to younger days skiing at Lake Louise and other places in the Canadian Rockies. Having wildlife that close while on the slopes was commonplace.[:)]
