Cincinnati to complete streetcar project
Amazing how the politics affects 100 jobs or part of an $8 Million payroll in Elmira Heights, NY where the cars are to be built. Is TruCab still in business in Cincy that I used to sell glass to from Elmira? We remember. Oh yes we do.
As one familiar with the Cincy streetcar route and the dereliction along it, there should be no surprises at how quickly renovation/gentifrication occurs. Studies have shown the economic benefit of rail expansion, but of course there are those who do not wish to be confronted with the facts.
Isn’t it sad how politics so often blights public transport projects. Here in Leeds (UK) we had a first class streetcar system in the 1950’s with lots of reserved track running but a different party took control of the city council and thought that they looked old fashioned so the whole system was scrapped by 1959. We are now the largest city in Europe without a streetcar system.
Will the new street car line go to CUT?
The streetcar won’t go to Cincinnati Union Terminal in either phase 1 or phase 2. Currently it is a North/South line circling from downtown near the two stadiums and the new casino going north up through the Over The Rhine area where most of the revitalization is focused.
I was driving through Cincinnati on the day the council voted on it. A couple of radio stations were wondering why it took them so long for council vote on it, which should have been a no-brainer. Cincinnati voters rejected the naysayers requests at least three times! Enough-moving to other issues facing the city was the only good thing he said about this. The same wealthy egomaniacs opposed to big government spending have no complaints about how much they should be allowed to spend on political campaigns, which may even be far more tha the projects they are opposed to.
