I’ve seen photos of the City Classics layout and it looks like what I’m searching for. A continous loop with some switching in a compact area.
Does anyone have the track plan with diminsions?

It was featured in the “Gumstumping” issue of Carl Arendt’s Small Layout Scrapbook.

The layout is 3’ x 10’ (two 5’ sections) in HO.
If you do it in N, you can use two 2’ x 4’ “Handy Panels” and you get a bit more space in the center.
A similar idea (two sections, portable, island) for consideration is Tim Diez’s “Summer Layout” in N scale. Two smaller “corner desk” sections connected to make a large “S” ish shape. Definitely doesn’t look like a sheet of plywood or a Hollow Core Door!
