City of Denver Consist

Hi there and welcome to the Forum.

I’m in the process of building the City of San Francisco with the new Walthers HO “City” cars, and Walthers shows a consist for every “city” train in their folders.

According to what I have, a typical City of Denver between 1955 and 1959 would have consisted of the following:

Baggage

ACF 44 seat coach

Pullman Imperial series 4-4-2 sleeper

Pullman Pacific series 10-6 sleeper

Pullman 48 seat diner

Pullman Cafe/Lounge

Pullman American series 6-6-4 sleeper

After 1959, the City of Denver was combined with the City of Portland, with additional cars.

I imagine that additional cars would be in the consist depending on seasonal traffic patterns, but this appears to be a basic 1955-59 consist.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, any idea how general the consist information from Walther’s is?

Also, if you are interested I have consist information for the City of S.F. from a the UP magazine The Streamliner for various as it passed through Green River Wy.

KnoxScott:

I have the feeling that it’s pretty general. According to the Walther’s chart, it “Provides some typical consists for UP Streamliners–actual consists varied by season and daily demands”. So I’m assuming that the seven cars listed for the City of Denver would just be the basic train–probably additional coaches and maybe a duplication for one of the Pullman types.

The reason I say this, is that their consist for the City of San Francisco only lists eight basic car types, but I remember the train usually being about fourteen cars long when I would watch it coming through Truckee, CA in the 1950’s. I would think possibly doubles for some of the Pullmans, and certainly additional coaches. For layout space, I’m just going with the basic consist as outlined by the Walthers chart.

Here’s a listing of every “City” car that Walthers is releasing:

Imperial series 4-4-2 sleeper

Placid series11 double-bedroom sleeper

Ocean series 5-2-2- sleeper

44 seat coach

48 seat diner

Cafe Lounge

Baggage-Dormitory

Baggage

Pacific series 10-6 sleeper

Dome Coach

Dome Diner

American series 6-6-4 sleeper

Observation Dome-Lounge

According to the chart, the domes were only used on City of Los Angeles, City of St.Louis and City of Portland.

I’m wondering if Googling either “Union Pacific Streamliners” or "Union Pacific City of Denver Streamliner might get you some additional information. I’m always surprised at what Google turns up.

From the book, Union Pacific Streamliners, the COD consist in January 1955 was:

Mail-baggage Express - C&NW 8900 or 8901

Coach - 44 seat - C&NW 3477-3482 series

Coach - 44 seat - C&NW 3477-3482 series

Club - The Pub - 37 seats 1502 or 1503

Dormitory-Kitchen - 5110 or 5112

Diner - 5111 or 5113

Sleeper - 4 comp, 1 drwg rm, 4 bdrms - Dream Lake (Boulder) or Bear Lake (Greeley) - articulated

Sleeper - 12 sections - Boulder (Dream Lake) or Greeley (Bear Lake) other part of articulated

Sleeper - 10rmtts - 6bdrms - Pacific series (as needed)

Club-Lounge - 1501 or 1500

The articulateds were scrapped in '56 for 6-6-4 sleepers as needed.

This book is a great read if you’re a UP fan trying to model specific City trains.

Hope this helps…
