This site is probably a better place to ask:

The Illinois Central’s City of New Orleans consist varied according to the time of year and passenger load. I rode it a couple of times in the late 1950’s and recall cars being added or dropped off at stops along the way as ridership demanded.
Except that a “1970s” CONO isn’t IC; it’s Amtrak.
GOOD POINT!!
I frequently rode the City in the early 60’s between Chicago and Champagne. It was all coaches except for one headend car (I think), a diner, and a tavern-lounge-obs. It was pretty long, usually 16 or so cars, but once I rode it was 24+ or so due to the holidays.
Unlike some of the “circus trains” of the early Amtrak ran, the City of New Orleans seems to have had a matching set of IC cars for the first several years after Amtrak started, going by pics and video I’ve seen.
Willie Nelson, his guitar, and an electric organ. [8D]
I’d much prefer Steve Goodman or Arlo Guthrie with guitar only![(-D]
