City of Seattle reopens King Street Station main waiting room

Spectacular! Can’t wait to see it in September!

It warms my heart to know that this beautiful public space has been preserved. In October 1944, while his ship (CL-10 USS Concord) was in port from the Aleutians for repairs and retrofit, my father met my mother off the train at King Street. She had taken the train across the country by herself to marry him in Seattle.

Here’s a more detailed sorting of the photos that I linked to in my earlier comment:

Wonderful ! Before this work was started, the building’s interior was an embarrassment—and that is being diplomatic. The Seattle Department of Transportation has photos on Flickr that show the work as it was being done.

It’s magnificent! No one will be disappointed.

Glad to know the work is largely complete. Will there be sufficient security to keep the derelicts and pot smokers out of the station? Let us hope so!!! It is too beautiful to waste again.

My wife and I visited it today. Simply gorgeous. Outstanding job from top to bottom. Used to catch the North Coast Limited there…

Totally cool! This is the kind of stuff that attracts people to rail travel - decent stations instead of drafty, dirty old tombs. Three cheers for the city of Seattle!

Fond memories as a kid hanging around there watching train action.

For a large city it is disappointing they never thought about a First Class Lounge in the remodel.

Excellent news. Can’t wait to see it when we arrive by Empire Builder on June 17th. I’m a native, but now living in (warmer) Texas.

I do hope the city or Amtrak provide adequate security to protect the building and passengers from the indigents and pot smokers who are looking for a place to roost.

I found the connection between King Street Station and Sea-Tac airport via light rail very convenient.

So, which Amtrak trains does it serve? There was a time when that station handled only the NP/GN/SP&S trains to and from the east, and a nearby station handled the trains to and from the south. If it is the only Amtrak station for Seattle, that makes sense in these times. If that’s the case, whatever happened to Union Station, which was close by?
