I seem to be always cleaning my tracks on my HO layout. I have tried a few liquid products and I find that perhaps after a week or less, I need to re-polish my rail heads. I glued a few small squares of 400 grit silicon carbon sand paper to bits of pink foam and have been using these little blocks as rail polishers. Now I was told I need to use finer crocus paper grade paper if I do not want to damage my tracks. But, I notice if I clean my tracks and run my trains right after, they run like honey in July. Should I worry about damaging my track heads? These liquid cleaners applied with a cloth are not a very satisfactory way to do this procedure as far as I am concerned. What do you think? I thank you all. don
There are cleaners, procedures and cleaning cars out there. You just have
to find the one that you are comfortable with.
I tried the $66.00 centerline cleaning car, the $99.00 Tonys clean machine,
various liquids, brite boy etc.
I finally settled on MAAS, a metal cleaner/polisher two ounce paste in a tube.
For $3.50. Try it. I guarantee it. If not happy, I will send you $3.50
There’s a procedure in applying it correctly to the railhead so if you are going to try it, post and I will reply.
THANK YOU MR, January 2003.
I take it that $3.50 offer is just for BostonRock [;)]
IMO, it’s just an excellent cleaner/polisher & delays oxidative degradation.
I also use it on my loco wheels by turning the loco over and run power clips from the rails
to the wipers. I use a thin bladed screw driver, small piece of t-shirt material , MAAS , power up
and apply to the driving wheels.
I used this method on a 1965 HO lionel steamer that was never cleaned in the 40 years.
WOW!
THANKS YOU MR, January 2003
