I need some advice on cleaning an old Varney 10-wheeler I recently purchased. The motor and most of the rest of the model are covered with dust and lint and it reeks of cigarette smoke. I was thinking I could disassemble it and go over everything with alcohol and a tooth brush, reassemble and lightly lubricate the motor bearings and gears. Will this cause any damage to the motor? (It isn’t worth investing in an ultrasonic cleaner.) Thanks.
Harold
I’d keep the tooth brush away from the motor, but the rest of the idea sounds good. If you want to make sure the paint job is secure, check the alcohol on a small out of sight corner to make sure it doesn’t lift it, especially the lettering.
If the motor is full of crud, get some spray tuner cleaner, I think Radio Shack still sells it, and use only the force of the spray on the motor.
It’d probably be easier in the long run to completely disassemble the engine, completely strip it, and repaint it. As for the motor, just buy a new one from Bowser (which still makes the Varney ten wheeler).
