Cleaning track, etc.

I have a HO gauge set that has been “stored” in my basement for about 25 years. It sort of works, i.e., if I apply power and press lightly on the engine it goes but stops as soon as I let go. I’m assuming that the contact isn’t very good, maybe the tracks and/or wheels need to be cleaned. How do I go about this? Any help greatly appreciated.

Try alcohol [not the rubbing kind as it is not nice to some materials]. A hard eraser might scrub off any residue. Most HO folks use the Model Railroader Forum that is sister to this forum. This is mainly O and S gauge. Good luck.

Scotchbrite pad and denatured alcohol on a rag.
