It’s too bad Cleveland cut back the service on the Waterfront light rail line. It was quite convenient to fly to/from Cleveland and then transfer at Tower City to get to Amtrak. The station personnel were very pleasant, the depot was open throughout the night, and I was able to wait for the light rail to start running in the morning in a warm waiting room. I just didn’t like the late night hours that Amtrak came through, but to initiate or end a rail trip there made sense with a good night time connection.
It is about time. This section of track washboarded and was always a slow spot with squealing flanges at 5mph. From the airport in the southwest of Cleveland to end of line at Windemere in the east it was always a nice ride except that section. The S-curve alignment was due to changing from the NYC to the NKP right of way to get to the Terminal Tower. Hope all goes well with the realignment.
In the photo, were the lattice-work catenary supports just this side of the Red Line, above what looks like an access road, once part of NYC’s electrification into Terminal Tower? Nice that the article mentions the Red Line’s historic role as first in the US to serve a metro airport directly. Now several others do, too, but we need more.
