This coming weekend (Sat the 29th), the Midwest Railway Preservation Society is having an open house on the grounds of the B&O roundhouse in the Flats of Cleveland, OH; where they’re working on restoring the roundhouse & turntable, locomotives, passenger cars, and freight cars, as well as any ancillary equipment needed to return everything to working condition (and keep it that way).
The group takes you on a tour of the facility, the cars and locomotives, while telling of the history of railroading (and specifically, the facilities/equipment there) as well as the future plans for the roundhouse. It lasts 90-120 minutes or so.
“Stops” on the tour include (but are not limited to):
- RS-3
- Pullman Coaches (NKP 62 and 90), and sleeper/lounge car (Mount Baxter)
- Caboose
- Machine Shop
There will probably also be other things of interest to stop at (because of the new equipment, and as stuff is moved around to be worked on, etc).
“Admission” is $5 for adults, and $3 for kids (under 12, IIRC … I don’t have any kids…). CLOSE-TOED SHOES ARE REQUIRED.
Edit – because I was thinking faster than I was typing. The first tour leaves at about 12:00 noon (give or take 5 minutes), and they leave every 15-20 minutes thereafter until 16:00, when the last tour departs. 15:30, when the last tour departs.
