Closeup of the Spiral Tunnels in action

Here’s a shot I took in September, I tried to be all artsy and dramatic. Be assured, the train wasn’t moving very fast! Click the thumbnail for a larger image and more information.

Another great photo, Matthew. Thanks.

WOW!!! We don’t have anything like that in Illinois  Keep 'em coming please

Nice photo, great composition, but if I remember with all the signs posted on and around the tunnels and right of way, you must have been tresspassing, or did you get permission from Calgary?

just a thought.

I have seen several like this.

One train is going East to West. another train is going North to South.

You can see more with Fly-overs.

Very nice. It’s much better than what I was able to take, from the wayside seven and a half years ago–the train was too short for it to cross over itself, so I took pictures of it as it entered the tunnel and as it came out.

The book “Nick Morant’s Canadian Pacific” has pictures of the Spiral Tunnels taken by Nick over the many decades he was the main photographer for CP. Once upon a time the view was quite clear of the whole alignment, but trees have this nasty habit of continuing to grow. Local fans all agree that a forest fire should do the trick and get the vista opened up again, but so far none of the campers in the Kicking Horse campground immediately below have been careless enough to start one!

Most freights are long enough to cross over themselves, something like 85 cars I believe. There is a famous picture showing a passenger train apparently doing likewise, and sometimes (mis)captioned that way. In fact Nick exposed the picture in two halves, first the passenger cars as the train passed on the upper level, and then the lower portion of the frame as it emerged from the tunnel. Several passenger cars were visible, in contrast to the very narrow opening of today.

It’s impossible to get there without trespassing, the trees have encroached onto the right of way so without a long pathless slog through a forest, you’re stuck following the CP grade in. It’s trespassing, but when met with due caution, it’s not dangerous.

Difference is that it’s one train, and if you’d like to get a better shot, go ahead. [:)]
