closing frog turnouts

I’m thinking Tru-Scale was the name. The pivot point worked so when you threw the turnout it aligned the point rails and closed against the main rail, no wheel bump to speak of. Still sounded ok though. Thinking hard on building some for my upcoming layout. I built some in brass years ago and they done good. Never had a problem with them. I used to have some drawings but can’t find those. I imagine I’ll use a standard turn as a starting point for dimensions. Will use 100 nickel silver. Anyone else use them? Thanks for sharing.

Closed frog turnouts are used by some in S scale. It allows the use of American Flyer wheels and scales wheels on the same track.

Here’s a site that shows building them in code 125 http://www.trainweb.org/bristol-s-gauge/Projects/cfrogsw/cfroginfo.html

Enjoy

that’s quite an extensive how-to. thanks for the info.

Check out E-bay under HO “Buidings, Track, Accessories”, narrowing down to “Track”. The Tru-Scale turnouts show up there at reasonable prices, making it easy to obtain a sample guide.

I have a couple of the Tru-Scale ‘Hi-speed’ turnouts still in use on my railroad and have found them to be extremely reliable over the years they have been in service. No derailments in the frog area, ever.

The prototype uses spring-loaded closing frogs (completely separate from the points.) I wonder if anyone has ever tried to model one.

For that matter, the prototype also uses self-guarding frogs, sort of a guard rail built into the frog itself, and no guard rail against the stock rail. I’ve seen these on low-speed trackage in industrial areas, but I’ve never heard of anyone modeling one.

Chuck.
