Saw two CN 2700 series locomotives (2704-05) today and noticed they were sub lettered IC on the cab. Anyone know why this is? A few months back EHH sent out a memo that the company was CN and references to past railroads were not to be used.

That’s right - in comunications, the CN name is to be used. That said, the IC reporting marks remain on equipment and continue to be applied, just as the GTW and DWP reporting marks still appear in the same fashion. It’s to do with which division the power is assigned to.
Chessie used WM, B&O and C&O sublettering the same way.
Hmm, I wonder if CN will start sub lettering BC Rail locomotives once they start getting repainted…
I would be surprised if there are any left to paint after about six months.
CN has IC sublettered in the 2700’s, GTW in the 5900’s, and WC’s in the 6900’s. These are just locomotives that were not repainted to see colors from that road. They are bought or long term leased out with sub-letters applied.
Also heard that in the future, there might be a line of new units with WC sub-lettering.
