Why would Canadian National, when it has all but irridicated anything marked
“Canadian” , spell out boldly CENTRAL VERMONT above the CVC reporting marks? For a line they haven’t owned for almost a decade, the logic of proclaiming a “fallen flag” escapes me. The CN squiggle and web site are prominate on the right side. And, I fully understand what CVC marks represents.
This could well be a car in captive service, such as newsprint, that hasn’t been relettered since CN probably still owns the CVC reporting mark. CVC cars could also be Canadian-built and restricted to international service.
I’ve seen CVC and DWC cars recently repainted (recently enough to have CN’s web address!), with the old name and logo still present. However, I’d suggest getting those pictures if you’re going to…more recent repaints have the CN logo and web address, with the original reporting mark and number. I’ve seen IC cars painted this way, too. Looks like boxcar red may be the universal color, as an IC covered hopper was painted with CN logo, white on boxcar red.
No guarantees, though…not enough sightings to form a conclusion.
The CN is repainting a lot of their rolling stock. The reason you are seeing the different “fallen-flag” reporting marks is because of financial reasons. A lot of those companies STILL EXIST!!! but only on paper.
The color is your basic boxcar red with white lettering. I have seen GT, IC, DWP, and even a few CC covered hoppers and boxcars. CN is putting their website address on new cars and locomotives that come in for painting.

I’ve seen many of these cars too, including a brown IC hopper car with the web address. I actually prefered CN having their covered hoppers grey as it provided a bit more variety as opposed to everything being brown. A weird thing I saw once was a boxcar in GT blue that was lettered Canadian National with CN reporting marks, but with no logo. I didn’t look as if it was painted any time recently at all.
