CN Collision

Does anybody have any information about the CN collision on the ex GTW in Posen, Illinois last week? I frequently railfan at nearby Blue Island junction so I am curious to know. I am surprised the incident was not in Trains NewsWire.

Have not herd anything, probably becuase im in New Jersey but it sounds like a doozy. By the way I see your a new member, welcome to the family[:D].

Here’s one article (not a very good one):

My wife said it made the TV news the following evening.

Somewhere else I read that the train delivering cars to the yard was a UP freight (transfer) originating in Proviso, so I’m very surprised I didn’t hear anything about it at work.

Hmmm, sounds like M342 or something. Lumber headed to Canada is a M3-- something train I believe. Does anyone have what power it was and if it was damaged? Also any for sure confirmation on the train #?

Glad to hear everyone is ok and its nothing serious.

Here’s the article run by Trainorders.com : I hope they don’t mind me copying it here, as long as I give them a good plug! Published on September 23.

CN Yard Collision Derailed Two Trains, Injured One Crewman
Author: TO News from Press Reports
Canadian National Railway crews are working to clear several rail cars and locomotives that collided and derailed near Blue Island, Illinois early this morning.

According to reports, Canadian Pacific Railway haulage train 534 collided with Canadian National Railway’s 392 train, under the control of a Union Pacific Railroad crew near the entrance to the Blue Island Yard facility.

Derailed in the collision were CPR AC4400CWs 9818 and 9570, with the 9818 sustaining heavy damage and winding up leaning precariously at a 45-degree angle. The CN 392 was led by CN SD75I 5644, which was dumped on the engineer side of the unit.

Officials say a switching problem caused one train to sideswipe another. A total of three locomotives and two cars carrying gravel derailed. It remains unclear at this time which train was at fault.

One engineer was slightly hurt when he had to crawl out of a toppled engine.

Crews hope to have the equipment cleared and tracks repaired by Friday. Both the CN, and CP units were to be moved to CN’s former Illinois Central Woodcrest shop for evaluation.

CP 9818, isn’t that one of their latest orders of AC’s?
