CN/IC Executive E9 Units

I’m kitbashing a pair of E9 units for my Central Atlantic that will be based on the units parent CN/IC runs but I can’t find any photos showing the roof details. I need photos showing the HEP units and other items that were added when they were rebuilt for BN. Can anyone help? Also I would like to add operating rotary beacons on the cabs, does anyone know of a manufacturer who makes units that operate off of track power.

Are those units formerly BN E9s? Maybe i can provide you some photos from the roof.

Yes, these units were rebuilt for BN by Morrison Knudson in the mid seventies I believe for Chicago commuter train service.

I have a book with the MK rebuilt E9’s pictured while in service hauling suburban trains on the BN. You can see the modefications made for cooling and exhaust. The book is entitled Of Zephyrs and Commuters. The author is Robert Olmsted and it was published in 1984. Almost all photos are black and white. No single photo shows all the details you would need to model this locomotive.

I do not know what exterior changes were made by IC except of course, the paint scheme.

Changes in the photos I could see on the MK units vs. CB&Q units are as follows:

Remove nose door headlight. I soem cases a small red light is on the door.

Two round cooling fans are installed in the center of the unit between the engine exhaust stacks. thses fans are similar to (or the same as) the orignal cooling fans over the engines. Teh tow fans are side by side.

Rear roof panal has a rectangular bosx with two exhaust pipes lying over it. There is a muffler on each one. Some units have the mufflers parllel to the car body, and others are diagonal. This is the same rear roof panel that had the steam generator vents on the original units.

There are louvers in the cabody panels at the rear of each unit. In some cases the louvers are in the BN white stripe, and in some cases, the louvers are in the green areas of teh lower rear panels.

There is some extra piping on the roofs in the rear half of the units.

Here are a few photos I took of BN E units back in the early 70’s, hope they can help.

BN 9925

BN 9912

I scanned one photo from the book I mentioned.

Lead unit in photo is 9913. It has the cooling fans in the middle of the roof. The mufflers in the rear are parrllel to the tracks. It has louvers in the lower rear side panel, and the unit number is painted with green numerals in the broad white stripe at the rear. Note the extra pipes on the rear half of the roof.

The second unit is 9902. It does not have the cooling fans in the middle of the roof and the rear mufflers are mounted diagonally. It has louvers in the middle real panel in the white stripe. The unit number is painted with white paint in the lower rear panel.

Sorry, the scanned phto is not high quality.

Those are really nice photos of 9925 and 9912 posted by Mojax You can see these do not have the cooling fans between the main exhaust stacks in the center of the unit.

Thanks for the help guys! Hopefully I’ll be able to replicate these details on my models without too much trouble.
