Listening in on the scanner, I heard of two CN trains that I’ve never heard on the Toronto to Chicago line (live in NW Indiana).
First was train 351 which seemed interesting:
Could only operate in the daylight and needed to be to Battle Creek by sundown. It was also restricted to one track on the NS line thru South Bend…cant remember which track it was. 2.Also, all opposing trains needed to stop, or it had to stop when passing.
Second was train 303 which met it at Haskels and was heading north on the IHB and was qualified to CP Hill. Never seen or heard of a 303 here before.
#351 appears to be a very large oversized movement. Hi-Wides in this catagory ar almost always restricted to movement during daylight hours for safety reasons - places with extra close clearances, and so forth.
CN often has hi/wides which require one train to stop. But this train specifically was ordered to operate only in DAYLIGHT. Dispatcher made a special note to an opposing train that the train had to make Battle Creek in the daylight.
CP Hill sounds like it was headed to Proviso via the IHB. I have no knowledge of anything special that has come in from CN (had it arrived while I was working, I would likely have seen it).
The daylight-only restriction sounds strange, but the other restrictions sound like a dimensional load of some sort. Perhaps it is something that would be hard to see during the night, yet could cause a hazard if it isn’t seen–like wide steel plates, for example.
