CNJ / CRP Box Car Info

Hi, I’m looking for prototype info on CNJ /CRP Pullman green box cars in the 22481 - 22500 series. In particular, I’m looking for letteing info for the sides and ends. Any magazine ever have this series covered? Other sources I may find this info?? Tx. Gerry

Champ Decals made lettering sets for these cars in HO and O, sets HB-25 and OB-25, although I believe they are long out of production. Lettering diagrams are contained in Champ’s “Freight Car Lettering Plan Book No. 2”, which is still available in hobby shops.

Gerry:

Railway Prototype Cyclopedia Volume 6 (published 2001) has a high quality photo of # 22481 on page 14 as part of an extensive study of BX boxcars of many roads.

Express box cars are very interesting yet seldom modeled subjects. Morning Sun Books CNJ/LV Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment by Craig T. Bossler shows two nice views of CNJ express boxcars in the pullman green/gold lettering. Champ HB-25 should still be available, I ordered mine to do just such a car a few months ago. I’m using a Branchline 40’ boxcar with the 10’ height. Don’t forget to include the train air line on the ends, and the extra railing by the door. Happy modeling, Jack.

Recently found an HO CNJ/CRP express boxcar decal set made for Tom’s Model Trains. This set contains enough material to do six cars. Upon receiving a set it was compared to photos of the prototype cars. Results are very pleasing. A plus is the dedicated service markings are included. View this set at

I would think this photo from the Fallen Flags website might be useful:
