CNJ H10-44's

Could anyone enlighten me re: the reason why CNJ leased some H10-44’s from the B&O and how and where the CNJ utilized them? I would appreciate any information. Thank you.

I don’t know the “correct” answer, but it seems that B&O had some sort of interest in the CNJ. The following link discusses some of that history: http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=1451.

How far back that controlling interest goes, or whether or not it had anything to do with any particular equipment lease, is a question that the other experts can probably answer.

The CNJ towards the end of its life, was financially strapped. It bought several engines second hand and leased more. They leased RDG AS16’s so they could MU them with the last remaining babyface Baldwins to make 2 unit sets.

The B&O was a majority stockholder in the RDG and the RDG controlled the CNJ. The RDG GP30 and newer engines were numbered to fit into the B&O roster. The CNJ had FM H-15-44’s and H-24-66’s, so the B&O wanting to lease/sell an oddball unit to get it off their roster and the CNJ needing some cheap engines that they had some experience with, wouldn’t seem to be a win-win situation. Got several engines from the B&O.
