CNR in Oshawa, Ont between 1960/'75

I grew up in Oshawa and still remember the train running down Riston Rd., however I can’t remember the engine used. Was it a 1200rs?. Also, does anyone have any pictures or information they’d care to share?

I was hoping to put a scene of track running through the middle of the street, just like I remember, past both the GM plant on the west side, houses and a few small shops on the east.

I’m hoping someone can help.

Check your Provincial and city (Toronto,Oshawa) online photo Archives. They probably have thousands of photo’s including what you may be looking for.

Hey Barry!

I grew up in Oshawa too! My grandmother lived on Bruce St and the tracks went right down the middle of that street as well. I remember the whole house shaking as the trains went by. I was pretty small and it scared the crap out of me. There was a yard just down the street and I remember being strongly warned to check for trains on all the tracks whether the signal bells and lights were operating or not.

I’m sorry but I have no knowledge of what engines were being used.

Do you remember the GM truck chassis being driven up Ritson Rd without bodies? The only thing the drivers had to sit on was a wooden box! It might be neat to model that too.

I don’t know if you are aware of this group but they would likely be able to help answer your questions:

That was originally the electrified Oshawa Railway (owned by CN), not dieselized until the 1960s. I think the tight curves would have limited power to switchers, although whether they were the SW1200RS or standard SW models I don’t know offhand. CN did feel it diplomatic to station GM switchers in Oshawa to serve the GM auto plant.

I remember the trains running up to the North Plant, it doesn’t seem like it was that long ago.
