CNW 8701, CNW 8646 and CNW 8681 Westbound To Oakland!

Did anyone else happen to catch the 3 CNW’s leaded the westbound out of Chicago to Oakland?? There are in full paint and clean from what I have been told!

Chad, check my post about the “dignitaries”.

I wish I’d caught the locomotives.

Maybe we will see them shortly on the Rochelle cam

Here’s the trio-

Anbody know about how long it takes to navigate the 70 miles Chic/Rochelle?

How long ago did they go through Rochelle?

Wow! That is sweet! Thanks alot for sharing the photo.

Noah

Seeing those 3 C&NW units with the emblems still on them with no UP patch has really made my day here! They’ve avoided the paint brush of the UP for 10 yrs now, how cool is that! Long live the C&NW! Thanks for the pics.

Egads! The second time we caught the three I must have been standing right behind this shooter. Cracks me up.

Carl, that’s where I was when I called you back…[:D]

Kat

WOW! [:D] Three clean unpatched C&NW units.[8D] Awesome.[:p] [bow]

That really is a great shot, especially to see something in it’s
original paint.
I’m not a big mid-western railroad fan,but this is still great.

It’s 1996 again![:o)]

From Michigan Ave. it should take you about 1.25 hours to get to Rochelle (it takes me about 45 to 50 minutes from Aurora, which is about 35 miles west of Michigan Ave.). By rail it could take from 1.25 to 20 hours, depending on the whims of the dispatcher and the traffic restrictions, wink, wink.

Your lucky if you can find one clean CNW unit in a UP consist.

As for the drive time from Chicago to Rochelle, who says you have drive straight from Chicago to Rochelle? I would follow the UP Geneva Sub west starting with a stop at Elmhurst - plenty of action there. A quick stop at College Ave (S Curve) and W Chicago (Kress Rd) before heading west to Rochelle on IL Rt 38 from Geneva. Spend some time at Rochelle. There’s another good spot on the UP just west of Rochelle, but I’m forgetting the name of the road. It’s just accross from the new UP Global III yard and up high enough that you can also see the BNSF trains entering Rochelle. Most of the “tourists” in Rochelle have yet to discover this spot. I think that the city of Rochelle is expecting this to become another train watching spot becasuse of the ample parking space provided. After your done at Rochelle, why not follow the BNSF C&I line back to Aurora and then follow the “The Racetrack” back to Chicago? Check out Eola Yard, Naperville/Lisle (both ends of a big S curve) and Highlands.

CC

Cool lashup. Now if I can only find a set of un-patched SPs.

[8D] Let’s not forget stopping by DeKalb on your way west to Rochelle, the parking lot accross the tracks from the old C&NW depot is an ideal spot and you can see the old coaling tower from there (whoops, think it has been demolished?). Good thought about returning to Chicago via the BNSF C&I sub-division…there is a really nice smooth ice cream stand right next to the tracks in Big Rock where you can sit at a picnic table with your frozen custard and watch the action (NOW THAT’S LIVING!).

Terrific pictures sorry I missed it. Maybe I will see them soon whyen I go to Nebraska [:p][:o)]

Apparently these three units are powering the KAPOA, which will probably be traveling through Nevada during daylight hours, maybe hitting Portola, California sometime during late afternoon - early evening.

Jim - Lawton, NV MP236

Looks like this train may hit Portola, California as early as 1500 hours, 3:00 PM today.
