CNW GT Northern Locos

I live in the North of Scotland and am planning to build an N guage American layout. Can anyone give me a quick idea what types of diesel locos were used on these railroads in the 50s. Also a brief outline of thier routes would be helpful.
Are there any specific books on these railroads? Cost must be reasonable as money spent on these is not then spent on rolling stock

Many thanks in advance for your help in this matter

Alex

Sounds like you’re going to be modelling my part of the world, Minnesota. I believe the only states served by both the Great Northern and the Chicago & North Western were (west to east) South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin (although GN only had a very limited presence in SD and Wisc.). My home area of Minneapolis/St.Paul would be about the only area where the two road’s mainlines met.

Oh!! About them diesels…well, be easier to say what they DIDN’T have in the fifties, as both CNW and GN were pretty promiscuous as far as diesel purchases in the 30’s-50’s. Of the big 4 diesel builders of the time (General Motors/EMD, American Locomotive Co., Baldwin, and Fairbanks-Morse) CNW had diesels from all four, and GN only missed having FM’s…but in the 60’s they did buy some new General Electric engines!!
