CNW Steam

Aside from the 1385, which is under major overhaul now/soon, are there any other steamers from the Northwestern out there anywhere?

Yes, there are a few preserved C&NW steamers, including an H class 4-8-4. All have been plinthed outdoors and I wouldn’t be surprised if none of them could be restored to operating condition. There was a list in the CNWHS magazine a few years back, maybe more than a few years back.

a 4-8-4 on display is still cool. any idea where it is?

An article in TRAINS about the H class (“Zeppelins they were called, but Zeppelins they were not”) in a 1970 issue indicated that they were all sold for scrap.

The sister to the 1385 , another ore slusher , is in the upper penninsula , the 175. The only other CNW engine is an 0-6-0 and I forget where it is preserved.

There are 8 C&NW steam locomotives listed here-

I forgot about the two in St Louis. The others I’ve never seen , I should be looking for the narrow gauge engines that are now in the Northeast.

My favorite C&NW steamer is the 2-6-0 out in Pioche, NV. We visited it last year, and took pictures of it. Very nice locomotive. Maybe the Fennimore museum could trade it’s loco for it? And, they could buy the 2 narrow gauge cars from Mid-Continent, and have a nice train.

The closest thing you are going to come to seeing a preserved H class 4-8-4 is in Belle Fourche, SD on the DME (former CNW line to Colony, WY)- there in the small yard is an H class tender being utilized as a water car. Other than that all and a few other tenders put into MOW service the H class units met the torch.
