I am repainting two of my C&NW C44-9W from Kato (never leave thinner and locomotives near eachother). I at this point am using the Acrylic Polly Scale CNW Yellow, but it just seems to look a little faded and less vibrant than it should. Am I losing it? What would my other friendly C&NW (and anyone else who knows about it) recommend for the yellow to repaint them with? Thanks in advance.

I would try the CNW historical sociaty. They have alot of info in this area. Also try your local hobby shop, many of the people Ive met are very good in this area!

I have come to the conclusion that CNW yellow of any era is very very subjective. I recall that even the prototype in the 1960s did not always match exactly however, even when freshly painted (not that there was much freshly painted stuff in the 1960s!).
Having said that the same is true for the Pennsy – I used to model the PRR and never could match commerical versions of Tuscan Red or Brunswich green.
Moral – maybe close is good enough

Eric, Being a west coaster I have no knowledge of what the “right” C&NW yellow would be. I fought with Floquil, enamels, for a long time trying to get the two flavors of Caterpillar yellow right. Finally gave in and just paint the Cats C&NW Yellow (Glossy) and weather the heck out of 'em. Yellow in general is a pain to deal with, won’t cover well, too orangey or not enough orange cast. Oh well, Dave Nelson is probably right – close is good enough. Close one eye and squint.

Yea you guys reminded me of the first time I saw CNW’s “Saftey Yellow”. I thought some one took an neon highliter and went nuts. Then I saw a few other models (and prototypes) in a similar color scheem.
My therory is “Its yours. As long as your happy…who cares what anyone else thinks.” Its been treating me fine so far!

You are not losing it. The Polly-Scale C&NW Yellow is the predecessor to the new Zeto Yellow. Badger Modelflex makes the Zeto Yellow the number is 16-56. Floquil also makes Zeto Yellow as well that number is 110260. Also it is best to prime the unit with white before the yellow. It makes the yellow look brighter.
