I’m finally getting around to placing my Walthers New River coal mine into position and have a question regarding how the covered conveyor enters the mountainside (adit?)… I’ve seen many photos of conveyor systems but I can’t actually visualize how the mine entrance would look with the conveyor.
I’m thinking of using an N scale concrete tunnel portal with the conveyor inserted in it.
Was there an entrance there for employees or did they use another mine opening? I know most mines were accessed through a vertical lift but I’m not sure about the conveyor arrangement. Was it offset in the opening to allow vehicles to enter?

Generally, the conveyor shield will have a portal of sorts built around it, and there would be a side door to the outside built into the portal, with a set of stairs if necessary.
