Yesterday’s (3/15/06) WSJ had a page one article about railroads’ role in the shortage of coal reserves at power plants in the US. The reporter did a good job with the story.

I don’t recall everything mentioned, but a number of factors were pointed out for the cause–the PRB derailments, hopper shortages, mergers, and the pinch on rail capacity because of the increased demand for rail transport from other commodities. Also mentioned the DM&E expansion plans.

Basically the same old story that we have been hearing for a while. Power companies want the federal gov’t to be the answer-Reregulation. With the expiration of a number of long term contracts, power companies are unhappy with the new freight rates in addition to the service levels that they have recieved.
