Hello
We all could use photos of coal tower grates. I am modeling the Walthers Modern Coal Tower (933-2903). This is a model of the NYC coal tower in Hillsboro, Illinois.
The model does not come with grates for the coal tower shed. Does anyone have photos or can direct us to photos showing the proper grating for these models?
If you have modeled the grates could you post photos and tells what you used.
Thank everyone in advance for their help.
Timothy
I have the older Walthers small coaling tower: no photo of the grate, but it’s styrene, with a solid strip under each rail, and the grate bars at right angles to the rail. You simply remove the tie strip completely where it passes over the grate. The grate was included as part of the kit.

My Tichy coaling tower has no grate, but the track that runs through it is meant to be used with the tie strip. To be honest, in both cases the grate is/would not be noticeable. If you really feel that one is necessary, it shouldn’t be to hard to build one from styrene. Use .060" sheet to construct the pit, and heavy strip or “I” beam for the rail supports. The grate could be built from either styrene rod or suitably-sized brass wire.
