I’ve had a good look around the net for a coal unloading picture.
I thought I’d try and model a port type unload with mayby a conveyor system.
Anybody got any ideas or picture links
Thanks, Ken.

Walthers makes a Coal pier but at a price!
I think I have a set of plans somewhere. I’ll have a look as I want to build one for my layout. I suspect it can’t be much harder then a curved Trestle.
Are you looking at a wood structure or a steel one?

I hadn’t considered what it was made out of just in the planning stages for the yard etc.
I’ve got modern diesels and hoppers so I guess steel.
Any plans pictures would be awesome.
Ken.
Try looking under “Rotary Dump”. It might yield you some hits

I suppose I could do this!!!

NOT!!!

Ken,
Have you checked out the April Model Railroader? You should be able to get some good ideas from the article on the Gulf Port layout.
Check out this web site. Look at McDuffie Terminal

I don’t think you want something like this modern loader used at the Port of Mobile. [:D]

Ken,
Here are a couple of pictures from the Coal Piers at Norfolk, VA uses by Norfolk & Western. I don’t know if you want to unload to ships though. Sorry about the blurriness of the pictures.

if all else fails build your own.
Ken, which way is your coal moving ?? From Rail to Ship or Ship to Rail.
Most people model Rail to Ship. I on the other hand am modeling the opposite. I am modeling a ship/barge to rail operation based around the Merills coal operation in Portland Maine. They take in coal from all over the US and overseas. Its then loaded into hoppers and taken inland to the paper mills.
My will run to a power plant in northern Vermont (Fictional) with small unit trains 20-25 hoppers.

There’s another picture somewhere on the net showing how the front end loader got on top of the car.
