Coaling Tower has been weathered

Well it made it home in one piece! after a 500mile airplane trip in my duffle bag, in a box surrounded by bubble rap and other kits.
As this is my first attempt weathering with chalk be gentle. Realizing I might have been a bit too heavy with the chalk. I’m still debating whether to put decals on it. The lighting is in place but I have yet to hook it up.

The weathering looks great! Its about the same as I would have done it!!

Fergie,

I think you did just fine with the chalks. [tup] Did you spray the outside with Dulcote to lock the weathering in place?

Tom

it’s a coal tower , it’s gonna get dirty !
it looks great

Looks just right! Grungy but not too grungy!
Chuck

Yes it’s been given a dulcote. So should I add some MESS and Don’t pick the Coal etc, etc decals?

Fergie

great start. I agree that the chalk is about right. The whole area is getting ready for the trash. You have a nice touch.

I’ve found that Dullcoat is unneccessary when weathering with chalk on structures. They are not going to be regularly handled, besides, after a few weeks, chalk takes a “set” and is very difficult to remove. If its something that isnt going to be handled, I just skip it. Besides Dullcoat seems to erase some of the chalk as it is sprayed on,neccessitating more to be added. If I have weathered somethign that needs spray, I use Krylon workable Fixatif (thier spelling) it doesnt seem to kill the chalk as bad as Dullcoat does.

Excellent work Fergie!!! I don’t know how you managed to get that home without breaking something…I’m impressed !!!

Hi, Fergie!

Beautiful job on the tower. I definitely would recommend that you NOT put any decals over the weathering. Looks good at this point, and the weathering should go on top of the lettering, not underneath it… Besides, you rarely see big heralds or anything on coaling towers. Small signs, like “don’t pick the coal” would be good on the hoist house, or maybe on one of the legs…

Looks good. You added a little more rust than I did. Are you going to put the roof over the receiving pit?

A nice job and a wonderful “touch” to the layout!! Way to go.

Would you mind detailing just HOW you got this thing home in an airplane and it didn’t end up lost with other luggage or smashed into bits???..

WilmJunc: This is one of those details I still have to add. I just forgot to add it as I was amazed it survived the trip!.. Don’t ask why I even thought about shipping it.

John: Well it’s like this… I’ve been going to sea for 25+ years and I’ve learned a fair bit including the art of packing fragile things.

Believe it or not I put the tower in a cardboard box packed in bubble wrap. The box (steel toe boot box) was then wrapped in a polar fleece “wooly pully” I also had a 2’ x 2’ cutting pad in the bottom of bag as well as other bulky padding inn the bag. Please note when I pack there isn’t an inch or “broken stowage”.

Funny thing… When I asked for a fragile sticker on the the bag, it got was X-rayed and my camera bag got swabbed for “something or other”. The guy that X-rayed the bag commented that I had several knifes packed away, of course I was taught that as a mariner I should always carriy a knife as it might save my life, not in a bar but on deck, when it’s getting hairy.

Scary times
